Our 78th Dad in the Limelight is Paul Banas of GreatDad.com. I want to thank Paul for being a part of this series. It has been great connected with him and now sharing him with all of you!1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)
I run GreatDad.com, a parenting resource for dads. I started it in 2006 after staying home with our second born and realizing that there were few resources at that time for dads.
2) Tell me about your family
typical American family with two working parents, and two kids, a boy and a girl
3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?
Lots less time and the need to hide or temper my frustration when I’m with my kids so they don’t see it.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?
Be aware and study the huge changes you and your partner will go through so the shock of the changes doesn’t feel as bad. For example. in the excitement about the baby, few people talk about the stress on the couple.
5) Seeing that you (or your position) are in the limelight, how have you come to balance parenthood and outside life? If you are currently not in the limelight per se, please still answer this in regards to how you balance parenthood and outside life.
Kids come first and while they haven’t erased all that we are as adults, we have learned to enjoy things through their eyes rather than either trying to do a lot without them, or regretting what we can’t do any more.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
Dads come in all shapes and sizes as do families. While we always promote active parenting for dads, we realize that most guys out there are trying to do the best they can while juggling life, work and family in a difficult economy.
7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?
Don’t feel guilty in wanting to do things with them that interest you. The key thing is to spend as much time with them and share your passions (unless they are hard whiskey and strip clubs of course).
What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
Flying kites with my kids on beautiful Sunday afternoons. I’m lucky to have a thousand more memories like that, and lots of pictures!
