Getting to Try Out the New GMC ( @thisisGMC ) Terrain #gmcwinterdriving

Last week I was lucky enough to be asked to go to Steamboat Springs, Colorado to try out the new GMC Terrain in winter conditions. As I have never driven the Terrain before I was very excited about the opportunity to not only learn abotu the new car and what it offers, but also to learn more about tips for driving in winter conditions. Living in Michigan, while I know we do not have a lot of snow and ice yet it is coming very soon!

Arriving in Steamboat Springs last Thursday I had the opportunity to explore the city which was very quaint and western in Nature (which makes sense). I found some fun shops with very neat people. One of the fun stores was a store named FM Light and Sons. This was a store that has been in business since 1905. I walked in and was amazed to see that they had a whole wall of cowboy boots and another section with so many stetson hats that you can not even imagine. What I came to find was that people come to this store from over 100 miles away to get fit for hats and boots and a large amount of their orders are custom orders. What this means is that a person would have to go to the store get fit and then come back in a month or two when the boots are ready to get fit again. You might ask if I stocked up on western gear, but alas, I would have to say no. That being said though I do have to say that I was impressed though in the overall selection and the personal attention that the store provided!

The rest of the town was great and the people were very happy to have tourists in town. I walked through the entire town and found some fun gifts for my girls as well as one for my family in general (have to come back with something, right?).

The first night that I was there we had the opportunity to eat at a great restaurant called Cafe Diva (perfect name for a Dad of Divas like me) and again we were met with great hosts and amazing food. I even decided to try fresh Bison and let me tell you, if you have never tried this, it is so tender and the flavor from this restaurant was out of this world!

Day 2 was where the meat of this program took place. This was the day in which I and the rest of our group would be learning to drive in winter conditions in the new 2012 GMC Terrain. We started the day with a great overview of the Terrain itself and let me tell you from all of the things that were being explained to us, I was very impressed, but as the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding, so it was up to the actual driving to let me get a true sense of the vehicle itself.

Getting into the vehicle I was impressed to find the large on-screen display with the

added upgrade of a navigation system. This system was great and ended up being (in my opinion) as good as the Garmin that I have in my own home.  With the fact that this is only an $800 upgrade it seemed to me to be a great add-on for this vehicle. The vehicle also has some great functionality built in for stability control as well as for someone like me that is a bit shorter, I appreciated the additional controls to make it easier for me to adjust the pedals as well as my seat so that I could drive in comfort. Add onto this the rear camera as well as the new safety features that alerts you when there may be someone that could be close enough to cause a collision (don’t worry, no bells and alarms, but instead lights that were easy to understand and follow).

The Terrain handled well on main roads and when we got onto the snow it also handled well. Keep in mind that we did have snow tires on, but I can say that we had no problems with the vehicle itself. One of the things that I really liked about the vehicle (outside of what I have already related) was the fact that it was so quiet on the inside. Even with winter tires on, I found the inside to be very well insulated to outside noises which was great. I also liked the fact that you could fold the seats down to the ground for easy storage and hauling if need be.

Seeing that this was a winter driving experience, I learned quite a bit about what to have in the car with you, as well as what to do when in a slide and other treacherous conditions. Outside of this thought, one thing that I did learn was more about when to shift into first or second gear when in snowy conditions, which was good to know in any situation!

When we were done driving we had the opportunity to go outside and experience more of Colorado. I chose to try something I had never done before, snowmobiling. I had heard fun things about this, and with my bum knee being what it is I knew that I needed to try this out for myself.

Getting out on the trail with the wind in my face was exhilarating. With that and the speed behind this I can see why this is a popular winter sport. After finishing this I wanted to go out for more and now that I am back in Michigan, I may just look into doing this!

All-in-all, I was completely impressed with the Terrain as well as my trip to Steamboat Springs. I have to say thanks to GMC (@thisisgmc) for the opportunity to go and try out the vehicle as well as to experience a great town in Colorado.

If you or your family are looking for an amazing vehicle, take the new  GMC Terrain for a test drive and I think that you will be as impressed as I was!

Reflections on my trip to theTime to Play Toy Show (@timetoplay, #timetoplay)

As a dad who loves toys and who loves to share toys with my daughters (and my readers – can’t forget you) I was floored when I was asked to go to New York City this past Monday to be a part of the blogging Team that attended the Time to Play Magazine’s (@timetoplay) Time to Play 2011 Toy Fair.

Seeing that I have not attended many blogging events let alone a toy fair, I have to say that I did not know what to expect, but I was still very excited about the event itself and all of the fun new toys that I was sure to be introduced to.

Leading up to the event my anticipation mounted as I spoke with some blogging friends of mine Adam Cohen (@DadaRocks) and Drew Bettett (@BenSpark) and found out that they would be there along with Josh from @DadStreet and a number of mom bloggers that I had seen around the internet but did not know them much more than that (but now I do!).  As I said I do not get to these events often and usually am confined to talking over the phone or via social networking so this was also going to be a treat.

The amazing people at Litzky PR treated me with utmost respect especially by Kaylie (@kayliegrace), she made every step of my trip amazing! I found out more about the trip itself and that I would be coming in the day before and meeting up with the blogging team. This was beyond my expectations and I was very excited to be sure!

Time to play, I came to find is an amazing company and website! They have amazing staff that go above and beyond to make toy buying easy for anyone. What they do best is get down to the basics with the toys and play with them like kids would so that they can share with their readers what the toys are really like and what their positive and negative aspects are. Their site (timetoplay.com) is amazing and so user friendly. In talking to the owners, they have so many great ideas about the future of the company, I know that I and I hope all of you will come to find that this will be your first step before purchasing any new toy!

The night before the event we all went out to dinner at a restaurant called Blue Smoke. It was amazing and I had the best Ribs that I have ever had in my life. If you are ever in New York City you should try this restaurant! We all had a great time getting to know each other and developing even stronger friendships.

Back to the reason I was going. I was going to see and experience the unveiling of the Time to Play’s Holiday 2011 Most Wanted Toys List. Every year Time to Play comes out with the top toys of the holiday season. Below I have linked to a video that unveils these toys to you.

The morning of the show itself was exciting, we got in a cab and went over to the Altman Building to experience the show itself. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was very well organized with a ton of great businesses. I started the day hanging out with my friend Drew from benspark.com , we started by learning more from Razor, Crayola and LEGO. I was amazed to find that there were so many new great toys on the market!

I could easily spend a long time today talking about all of the toys that I I learned about but I will be talking more about these in the following months as I review the toys and possibly even give some away as we prepare for the holidays!

After the show I had to catch my ride back to LaGuardia to fly back home. I was surprised to find that three great moms that I met at Time to Play were on my flight to Milwaukee and I got to sit by them on the plane as well. So thanks to @momstart, @OutnumberedMama  & @RobynsWorld for making a long wait in the airport and on the plane enjoyable and I look forward to keeping in touch!

I had am amazing time and I have to say thank you SO much to a few people that made this happen. First to Adam Cohen (http://dadarocks.com) as he was the person that passed my name on to Time to Play and thus is the person that paved the way for me to have this experience. Second, thanks to Kaylie Nelson, a great PR Representative and a great person (and so organized!). She did an amazing job at balancing everything. I am completely hooked and know that I will be spending a lot more time on Time to Play Magazine’s Website and you should too!  I made the video below to talk a little about my experiences…hope that you enjoy!

Book Review – The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes

About the Book

Beatrice Bottomwell has NEVER (not once!) made a mistake…Meet Beatrice Bottomwell: a nine-year-old girl who has never (not once!) made a mistake. She never forgets her math homework, she never wears mismatched socks, and she ALWAYS wins the yearly talent show at school. In fact, Beatrice holds the record of perfection in her hometown, where she is known as The Girl Who Never Makes Mistakes. Life for Beatrice is sailing along pretty smoothly until she does the unthinkable–she makes her first mistake. And in a very public way!

About the Author

Writer and illustrator Mark Pett lives in Mississippi with his wife, two children, and a very old dog named Catfish. Every February, the family draws five random digits from a hat and travels to whatever zip code it makes. He has illustrated several books and is the creator of the syndicated comic strips Mr. Lowe and Lucky Cow. Gary Rubinstein teaches high school math by day and is occasionally a comedian by night. In addition to co-authoring this book, he has written two guidebooks for new teachers. He lives in New York City with his wife, Erica, and his daughter, Sarah.

My Take on the Book

This was a great book for all kids. Why do I say this? I say this because I have seen too often how kids learn or are told to be perfect and to not make mistakes. I have seen parents that get frustrated with the mistakes that kids make. This book makes it very clear to all kids that not making mistakes is hard to do and can add a lot of stress onto anyone. I read this to my eldest and we had a long conversation afterward about what the book meant and I have to say that we both loved the book.

This book definitely shows kids that it is ok to not be perfect and most of the time it is quite fun. What a great message to share with your kids and for them to take them on a daily basis!

A Better World Provides Meaningful Entertainment

A Better World, a Facebook game that rewards players not just for in-game activities but also for real world acts of kindness and expressions of gratitude, has soared to more than 120,000 players.

This game was an interesting one. In doing some research it seems like the game was popular with women, but I have to say that I found many redeeming properties to it as well. What was nice about the game was the fact that it was not merely a brainless banter. Instead, this game makes you look at yourself and what you would do to if given a chance to make a difference.

Each portion of the game is there to help you find ways in which to raise one’s self-esteem. I found this to be true as in many of the games it encourages doing more for others and to make positive choices in your daily life. I can say as a father that these are all things that I want my own daughters to learn and if a game (online or otherwise) can help with this process, if should definitely be one to consider for everyone’s family.

The game offers more than 15 locations for community members to explore, including the:

  • Department of Do Good – A place you can share real world good deeds you’ve performed and see what other members of the community have done
  • Gratitude Grotto – A charming area where you can reveal what you are thankful for and express your support for messages left by others

  • Sanctuary of Hope – A building where you can communicate your hopes and dreams and send encouragement to other players
  • Arcade – A play area with uplifting mini-games to enjoy alone or with friends
  • A new feature is the Better Pets Pet Shop, filled with adorable puppies, cute kittens or even a magical unicorn

This game was developed by ToonUps, a digital entertainment company that has focused on developing digital content that encourages a positive outlook and altruistic behavior for more than a decade.

ToonUps hopes A Better World’s original approach could usher in a new genre of “do good gaming.”  Research shows that being encouraged to think about things they are thankful for and doing activities that provide encouragement to others improves their mental, emotional and spiritual well being.

For me, I found this game to be fun, engaging and meaningful. I found the messages that it contained inspirational and I could tell that these would definitely be ones that I would want to share with my own kids, as they related much to giving back and making a difference, two things that I feel strongly about! If you feel this was as well, I encourage you to go and check out this new game today!

I was given the opportunity to share my thoughts and opinions on A Better World. I received a gift card as a thank you for my participation. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lands End Polos, Make You Look and Feel Great

I like to dress well! I love finding clothing that fits well and that lasts because as many guys do, I keep clothes for a LONG time, and when I say LONG, I mean LONG. To place this in context, I have sweaters that I wore back in High School. Now I did not say that J-Mom likes that I keep some clothes a long time, but alas, I still do.

I digress… as a short man though, sometimes I find it hard to find clothes that actually fit the way that they should. Many times I have to special order or tailor clothes to make sure that they fit. Luckily there are company like Lands End that swoop in for the rescue and work with their customers to get them fit in the clothes sizes that they need.

I was recently asked to try out their new Polo Shirts. I chose a color that I did not have much of within my clothes drawer and hoped for the best. The shirt arrived shortly after order and I was impressed at first glance about the quality and workmanship on the shirt. One thing that struck me as strange was that the Small Shirt actually was sized at a 32-34. I thought that a mens shirt size would be smaller than this, but alas if was not meant to be.

The shirt I received was of high quality and they had a great variety of colors. I chose a green that was much more florescent green. Though this was an issue, I still ordered one and waited to see if it might be the same color that I saw online. When it arrived, my first impression was,,, WOW , this is definitely green. I ended up putting the shirt on and I was impressed to find how comfortable it was.

You see, I enjoy polos. I cannot wear them at work, but during the evenings and on weekends (when the weather is nice outside). So for me a first or other special custom fitted apparel. So if you or if that other special man are looking for high quality clothes at reasonable costs, Lands End may be exactly whet you are looking for.

Overall, I was impressed with how well these shirts fit, and the return policy that comes with everything . Also, the shirt breathes very well and the 100% cottom does its work without fail. I will definitely say that Lands End will be a company that I will be visiting again and again in the future!

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Dad Central Consulting on behalf of Lands’ End and received a polo shirt to facilitate my review, one to giveaway, and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
