I am continually working with my kids to help them to be able to be people that give back to the community that they live in. I have been lucky enough to be able to work with some brands in the past that have allowed me to be able to do this and to get my children involved.

Odwalla, a brand that I tried in the past truly love is working with a program called Champions for Kids that works to works to mobilize MILLIONS of people by providing training and resources to improve the lives of children in communities across America and beyond. Their goal is to mobilize 20 Million people by 2020.  One of the ways in which they are trying to mobilize individuals is through providing healthy breakfast options for all children once they leave school for the summer.

I know that even in my own community we have over 70 families who rely on our local food bank to be able to have the food they need throughout the year. Many of the kids in the family’s attend the same schools as my own and they rely on the breakfast food that they receive at school and the free and reduced lunches that they receive to supplement the food that they receive from our food bank.

odwalla

With that in mind I set out to again have my kids make a difference in our local community by going out and purchasing Odwalla products for our local food bank to donate to help feed these children over the summer. On top of the list we also reached out to all of the second grade classrooms in my daughter’s elementary school to begin a few week process to collect breakfast items that could be donated by a second graders and their families to the food bank – again to support their efforts on feeding families that really need it in our community.

Walmart #cbias #Odwalla4Kids

The shopping process itself went pretty well and we went to our local Super Walmart which is about 15 minutes away from our home. In entering the store I did have some difficulty finding the products that I was looking for, but I ended up finding the Odwalla bars themselves in the produce section of the store. I would not have originally thought to look here, but knowing how natural the products are, it seems to make more sense that this is where they were now that I think about it. On top of the bars, I was also looking for the new juice boxes that they are carrying for kids, but my store did not carry this, and the only beverage that they did carry was not one that I thought would stay good for the time that I needed it to.

odwalla, #cbias, #Odwalla4Kids

I was impressed with the variety of bars that were available from Odwalla, and in looking at the nutritional content I was also very impressed. My kids and I snacked on an extra bar that we purchased and the kids devoured it (a good sign for the kids that are going to be receiving these at our local food bank.

odwalla, #cbias, #Odwalla4Kids

This past weekend was the spring food drive for our Food Bank so this project fit in nicely with that. We went though the house looking for any other food that we could donate and found some extra as well. After a full morning of Soccer, we ventured over to our Food Bank to deliver our food.

odwalla, #cbias, #Odwalla4Kids

The Director of our local Food Bank is always excited to see my kids and I as she knows that we always bring some fun things. She was quite happy with the delivery that we made on this visit as well as she mentioned that this was the first time that people have brought this type of food in and she thought it would be a great addition to the food that they were planning to give out in the near future to the local families utilizing their services.

odwalla, #cbias, #Odwalla4Kids

At the end of all of this my eldest daughter came to me and said, can we do something like this again?  As you can tell this was a proud  dad moment and we are now looking for future ways to engage with both the food bank as well as in other areas in the future. I am hopeful that the second grade project will be successful as well as I know that this will be a big hit with them as well once we get them all involved!

Making the 4th of July That Much Better With @Sears #SearsPatio #GrillingIsHappiness #cbias

For me the 4th of July has always been about family and celebrations. Whether it has been celebrating at home or at family or friend’s home, we always tend to get together with others to celebrate the great nation that we live in, but also just celebrating the ties that bind us together. This year, instead of traveling to my inlaw’s house, we will be having a celebration at home (much of the reasoning behind this is because of what day of the week the 4th falls this year). We will be having a few friends and their kids over and will be having our own little celebration followed by fireworks that are sent up at a church which is within sight distance of our home, so we can watch them from our deck.

I am not the type of person to go all out with decorations or anything like that, but we do plan to have our whole deck set out and allow for the kids to have their own table as well so that they can have fun too. Don’t get me wrong, the American Flag will be flying and we might even have some fireworks of our own!

I was excited to be selected to work with Collective Bias on the #SearsPatio #GrillingIsHappiness campaign, as I had not been to Sears in a while and had not really explored the Sears Outdoor Living Section lately, as the last time I was there was around Christmas time and there were no outdoor patio sets or grills available at that time (or at least the selection of grills was vastly limited). I was asked to either shop fora new Patio Set or a New Grill, and let me tell you this was not an easy decision as both were needed and Sears did offer some great options for both.

When I went to the store I was impressed by the variety of things that they offered in store, as I had explored their online site (See below for links) and I knew that they had a wide selection of grills and patio sets. I was particularly impressed with the number of grills that they had in stock. From Weber to Charbroil and many others, you have a wide variety to select from.

I weighed my options and found a number of patio sets that I liked in the store, and I would have to say that the grill conundrum was equal, as my mind was left a bit boggled as there were so many options.

The salesperson that we worked with was very helpful and I was interested to see that he and his fellow co-workers were all using IPad devices to connect customers with their online sites. He showed me the items online as well as reviews that were there and as I continued my exploration, he kept track on his IPad of the items we were considering. At the end of the shopping trip he let me know about this and that he would email me links to all of the products that I had been considering in the store. How slick is that, and all he had to do is get my phone number and based on my Shop Your Way Rewards Account, he sent everything to my home email address.

I decided not to purchase anything at first as I wanted to go home and think about all of my options, explore the links that had just been sent to me as well as the rest of the Sears site itself and then make a final decision.

When I got home, the email that the salesperson mentioned was there and there were a ton of great resources included in the email itself. I explored these and the Sears website and I found both to be very helpful. I was happy to see that they had a review section as in two cases, patio sets that I considered were not receiving positive reviews from customers in regards to their overall outdoor durabilty, so I chose to steer away from these.

In the end, my wife and I chose to go with a new grill. Why did we choose this? Well, we do a lot of grilling and have come to find that Michigan weather is many times rough on grills. I have never had a grill that has held up to the elements after only a few years, nor a grill that I would write home about saying that it cooked better than what I could do inside (which really is not grilling). I have been a fan from a distance of Weber Grills for some time, but have never stepped forward to purchase one due to the overall cost. This shop gave me the opportunity to step over this and purchase the Spirit Weber Grill. I would have preferred the Genesis (The next size up), but no Sears stores in our area had this available and I would have had to pay over $100 for shipping, so that was not really an option.

I have just put this grill together in time for the 4th and I found that it did take a little longer than I had first thought, as I misused a few screws that I thought were to be used in another area, so it was definitely user error on my part. We ended up having our 4th of July Big get-together yesterday, and the grill worked amazingly well. The meat cooked thoroughly and I was impressed with how easy it was to use. The picture below shows you the last batch of meat that I had to throw on after my first batch was complete (people were eating a lot). People remarked later that the meat tasted great and I know that in part it was because of the tools that I was able to use!

What about you? What are your plans this 4th of July and is grilling a part of the plan?

Brooks Brothers ( @Brooksbrothers ) Offers Great Quality Clothes and Goods #CBias

For me, my style is somewhat consistent as I have not changed size for some time, nor have I changed my style per se in many years. There are even clothes that I still have that I had since high school to the consternation of my wife in many circumstances. It is not that I am against new clothes, but it is always hard for me to get rid of clothes that are still in good shape. That being said though, I work in a place where I have to dress in professional dress on a daily basis and with this in mind I find that I am needing to purchase more dress clothes on a more regular basis because of clothes not lasting as long as I would like.

I have to believe that much of the reason for the clothes not lasting is that they are not as high of quality as some I could purchase. Especially when it comes with dress shirts I start to notice that the collars of the shirts sometimes get pills on them after I wear them for a period of time and this continues to get worse the longer that I have them. In saying this, I was excited to explore and shop at Brooks Brothers as I have shopped there in the past (in their physical store) and the quality of their clothes have always been top notch.

Some people have said to me that they do not shop with this store because of the prices in the store (as they tend to be a bit higher), but when I hear this I tell people that there is a reason that their clothes are more expensive and that is the fact that the quality is that much better. I equate it like this, if I spend a bit more now for the dress shirts that I want, I will have this shirt a bit longer than others that I have purchased that were lower in price in the scheme of things.

I went to the website to see what it had to offer and was quite impressed with the over crisp clean look and feel of the site. It was so easy to find what I was looking for, not only in the sense of size, but also style and color too. As a person of smaller stature, I sometimes have difficulty finding my exact size, but I was happy to see that this was not the case when it came to this site. They had a large selection of things in my size. I was also surprised to find that Brooks Brothers had so much more than just Mens Clothing as this was the only line that I had been introduced to in the past. I also was surprised to find that they not only had clothes, but they also home goods too.

All-in-all I was quite impressed with the site and the experience of shopping on the site itself. I have not yet received my items, but know that I will be quite happy with them when they do arrive! If you have never checked out Brooks Brothers you should and soon!

  • Supports difficult decisions involved in creating a new life of safety, healing and independence.
  • Is aware of the presence of domestic violence and its impact on families.

THEIR SHARED VISION is that every woman and child will have the supportive resources they need to live without fear in their homes and see themselves as courageous victors, finally free from family violence.

They are networking with international advocates to end domestic violence one woman, one family at a time.  Become a Brave Woman Champion. Take the pledge today and join other brave women in your area. Everyone who joins the Brave Woman community receives a free download of Jana Stanfield’s song, What Would I Do Today If I Were Brave and other sources of reflection and encouragement.

Why I took the Pledge

While my life has never been touched recently by domestic violence, I have seen this in my own family. I have a grandmother that lived with violence in both of her marriages and though I never saw it happen personally, it changed her as I know it does for all women who this effects.

I chose to take the pledge as a man and as a father to stand up for women all-over that have been impacted by violence to support them and to encourage them to take a stand and to do what they need to do to break the cycle of violence and stand on their own.

At the same time I feel that I need to take a stand to not let others be disrespected and humiliated by violence or words, and I want to let other women know that I am there to support them if and when they are ready to take the stand that they need to take as well.

I highly encourage all to take the pledge and take a stand like I am today!

My Take On This

As a father of two girls I have to say that I completely support this cause and this organization. While the website itself is still developing the ideals behind the site itself are great and need to be addressed. I know that I for one have been sharing the online pledge with other fathers that I know of that have daughters as this organization does a ton and the potential for this organization is endless!

I have heard the stories of many women over the years that I would consider to be brave, I cannot say that I have known anyone personally that has been abused in this way, but I know that it occurs and that it needs to stop! The women that escape from this, in my opinion, are very brave, as they set themselves out to an unknown future, but they know that they deserve better, and they do!

I know that I want my own girls to be able to grow up and be brave, to stand up for themselves and to never allow anyone take control over them. I can only hope that I am up to the task to help them to learn these skills as they get older!

I highly encourage you to go to the Brave Woman website and take the pledge to support this cause, it is definitely worth it and you will be taking a stand for something important and meaningful!

Decorating My House thanks to Sears #Searsrealcheer #CBias

As I said in my earlier post about shopping for holiday lights, I purchased about 5 strands of lights on Black Friday (yes I got up that early).

Luckily on the same day we were having a bit of an Indian Summer experience with temperatures in the 60′s which is completely abnormal for weather in Michigan in late November, but perfect weather for setting up Christmas lights and not freezing my tail off!

So when I got home (and after a bit of a resting period) I began pulling out the Christmas decorations and figuring out what I would want to put outside (outside of the items I had already purchased from Sears).  As I started to pull them out and starting installing them, I found that I could really use more lights that I had initially purchased. I still moved forward, but I did wish that I could have more.

Installation of the lights was easy and I loved the handy light reel that they came on as it made for easy unraveling and I am sure it will make it that much more easy to take the lights down too. Putting together the snoopy that I purchased at Sears was also easy, though I found that I needed something heavier than the small stakes that we received in the box to hold it down in the wind that we sometimes get at our house.

As I finished hanging a wreath and some garland on the outside of my house the sun was just starting to set so I was excited to try out the lights to see how it all looked. I knew that I was a bit short on lights (at least in my perspective) but I continued with vigor and knew that it would look great. As the sun dipped below the horizon I synchronized our timers and turned on the lights and found that the lights looked quite good. I still would have liked to have had more lights, but with what I had it looked very good and the family agreed.

Seeing that I did think we needed more lights I did go back to the Sears Holiday Shop the next day and found that they were out of the warm white lights (Bummer)!  Luckily though I found that they were offering the same lights online with free shipping for the same cost!

All-in-all I was so glad to have the opportunity to shop at Sears for my holiday lights this season. I have never used their holiday shop in the past but seeing the breadth and depth of lights and the competitive pricing that they offer I will be sure to return in the future!

I have shared photos of my initial shopping experience at Sears here in my Google+ Account!

Doing a Little Holiday Light Shopping at Sears #Searsrealcheer #cbias

Christmas in our house is always one of my favorite times in the year. We love going all out in decorating inside and outside. Lately thought I have been having some challenges with our outdoor lights in regards to the fact that our lights kept going out and every year it seemed like more and more of them would show up as not working (so frustrating).

I have been looking to be able to transition my outdoor lighting to LED lights but every time I look into it the cost was always a bit prohibitive and thus I was always a bit wary of making the jump. I was recently asked though to go to Sears and check out their Holiday Shop and in specific in their outdoor lighting section to make my LED transition a reality thanks to Sears and Collective Bias, so as you can imagine I was quite excited!

I decided to be a bit crazy and get up at the crack of dawn for black friday sales seeing that Sears had their 200 count LED lights at 50% off. Getting up at 3:30 in the morning is not what I call my cup of tea, but I did it none-the-less because I like to save money (I am a bit frugal you know).

Sears was opening their doors at 4:00 AM so I wanted to be there toward the beginning so I could be sure to receive the lights that I wanted. When I got to the store the parking lot was a bit packed, but the doors had just opened and everyone was already inside so I jumped into the craziness.

Amazingly, there was no one in the holiday shop when I got there. I think everyone had gone directly to the craftsman tools or other items, as I was left to shop in peace. The only issue was the fact that there were no carts and thus carrying 6-7 reels of lights was no fun! I looked around for a bit looking for the lights and then found that they had been placed on an endcap (right in front of the nose on my face if you were).

Seeing that I never purchased LED lights before I had to do a bit of comparison shopping as there were two types of LED lights so I had to test them both out. One was much more harsh and stark white than the other and with that in mind I decided to purchase the warm white lights as I thought they would be more similar to what we have had in the past. The only challenge that I found was figuring out how many strands I would need to purchase. I ended up purchasing 5 strands as I thought that this would be enough at the time.

At the same time I saw an animate Snoopy and Woodstock that was just too cool, so I ended up splurging and getting our first item that was animated for our outside decor, I knew that my kids would just love it when I brought it home and installed it!

I got lucky in checking out as I also purchased a jewelry armoire for my wife and thus when I was in the furniture department that were good enough to be willing to let me check out there (no line) and I did not have to wait in the line that had at least 100 people within it (how luck am I).

Overall, I was impressed with the size, breadth and depth of holiday decorations that Sears had in their Holiday Shop. I would highly recommend that if you are looking for some great holiday decorations that you take a look at Sears as one of your first stops this holiday season.

I have shared photos of my experience here in my Google+ Account!

Making Cell Phone Shopping Fun – Shopping for the Motorola Photon #MotoCalyp #cbias

I have had the same phone for quite some time and it is getting to the point where I can no longer even understand what people are saying when I talk to them because of the internal speaker and problems with it. I have been contemplating upgrading to a data plan and a more robust smart phone but have been hesitant due to price. Thus, I decided to do some research on smart phone that were on the market on my carrier (Sprint).

In doing the research I found that I was drawn to the Motorola Photon. I was impressed with all of the extras that the phone provides, the great internal camera and graphics as well as so much more! I was excited when I was asked to go and research this phone a bit more as I continued to prepare to make the decision of whether to buy this or not.

I decided to go to a few stores and try out the phone itself as well as do some price comparison as I know that I would like the best deal that I can find on this phone if I so chose to do it, I started my search at Best Buy.  The first thing that I noticed here was that they had a good selection of phones for many carriers. I did not like the fact that the phones were inoperable.  The price for this phone was reasonable though, a mere $99 with a two year agreement.

Then I decided to try out local Sprint Store and there they had less phones overall, and for some reason their prices were substantially higher than Best Buy ($100 higher). I found this to be interesting as I would have thought that Sprint would try and be cost conscious, but alas they were not.

In looking at the phone itself I have to say that I loved the overall display and the screen was so large. The pictures and color in the display was so vivid and when you watch a video on the phone you will be amazed to see how clear of an image it produces. The camera takes decent pictures (as good as a regular 8 mp camera will. The phone does make gathering and sharing information intuitive in nature and so easy.

Overall, I was impressed and I know that I will be highly considering this phone in the future as I make the change to my own phone!

STP ( @originalSTP ) Multipurpose Motor Treatment, A Great Product to Get Your Engine On the Right Track #engineluv #cbias

I have always been the type of person that wants to make sure that my cars last a long time and living in Michigan I have a harder time with this, especially with the salt that they use on the roads in the winter, talk about breaking down the undercarriage of my car!

This being said, I have never really been great skilled or adept with maintenance on a car, thus I learn what I can and usually I take my car to the professionals. I would love to learn more though and be able to do more as I know this is not only cost-effective, which is always important to me, but also it is something that a man is supposed to know, right? (Is that stereotypical or what) .

Recently I was asked to work with STP and Collective Bias to shop for and try out STP’s Multipurpose Motor Treatment. I decided to find this at my local Walmart and I was impressed with the amazing selection of Engine Treatment products that were on the market (I am so behind the times). I chronicled my trip on Google + and I encourage you all to go to the below link to see more!

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/100572181234104788072/albums/5670586566414665425

I also documented my experience in using the product on youtube below:

As you can see I was able to find the product and to use it in one of my cars. I am planning on using this in my older car very soon as well.  I was very impressed with the product and its’ versatility. As I mentioned in my video I need to identify a better way to put the product in my car, especially if I am not using the entire product all at once.  Overall though I am looking forward to seeing the overall results and I know that you too will find this product to be a great addition to your car maintenance routine!

Halloween Is Not All About Getting, But It Is Also About Giving ( @MarsGlobal ) #cbias #DontBeTheDarkHouse

I am always looking for ways to teach my kids about the importance of giving back to the world. Whether it is is small or large ways, we try our best to work hard and find ways to give in our own ways.  In the past my daughter put together a sticker project for our local food bank (on her own I might add) and I wrote about it here and you can here about it in her own words on youtube here.

Outside of this though as I mentioned I work to allow our kids to come up with their own ideas about giving to others, but m I am also given opportunities to develop opportunities for them too. Recently I was asked by Collective Bias and Snickers  to put together a Halloween Charitable Basket or some other similar project that could be given to people in need.

Mini Candy to work together on a campaign to give back and to show people that Halloween is more than just getting candy
We shopped at Walmart for all of our candy that we needed. We stocked up on Mars Brand Candy and even found some other fun Halloween pencils and plastic fangs and a few other fun items as we wanted it to be fun for the kids. Our daughters were completely into this!y, but it also is about giving as well.

When we got home we decided to make the bags into a learning lesson and actually made an assembly line. We ended up having a bit of a lesson on Henry Ford and automation as we had gone to Greenfield Village earlier in the summer and felt that we needed to continue this education as we made the bags. The bags came together well and we luckily had enought items for all of the bags!

The kids had a blast putting together the bags themselves and last Friday we took all of the bags to the Hospital itself.  The kids were a bit nervous at first as they did not know what to expect, but once we were there they saw that the kids were just like them and they thought the Pediatric Unit was very cool too.

This project was a great one for my family as it truly did help my children to see the benefit of giving to others and I hope as a father to only continue this learning process in the future as they get older!
