Book Review – Lifting the Wheel of Karma

About the Book

A Profound Spiritual Journey of Extraordinary Healing and RedemptionJoseph Connell is a gifted high school athlete from Montana, loved deeply by his family, yet tormented by nightmarish visions he can neither explain nor escape.

He believes the answer to what threatens to crush him can be found in the knowledge possessed by a mystical old wise man, who lives deep within the remote Himalayas ofIndia.

If Joseph is ever to find the peace he so desperately seeks, he must get this wise old man to reveal what he truly knows, but that will not be easy…for this sage knows far more than he admits.

A modern tale that harkens back to the myths of antiquity. It takes you on a remarkable journey, while exploring the themes of healing, redemption, forgiveness, sacrifice, and ultimately…peace within.

About the Author

Paul H. Magid started writing his debut novel, Lifting the Wheel of Karma, twenty-five years ago while still in high school. It took him so long to complete because he tried repeatedly to abandon it, but the work refused to be forsaken. Eventually he realized that sharing this story with the world was, in fact, his Dharma.Along the way he has worked as a Wall Street financial analyst, a waiter (not a very good one), a Hollywood Agent Trainee, a real estate developer, a summer day camp director, an award winning screenwriter, and independent filmmaker—including his autobiographical film, A Life Unfinished, which screened in The Hamptons International Film Festival.

My Take on the Book

What was amazing about this book was the way that in a slow but steady pace you are given the opportunity to look at the world in a different way. The book was captivating and engaging and I found that once I started the book I did not want to put it down. The spiritual nature of the book was amazing and I found myself being very interested in what the author had to say and the characters that he used to bring across his message. I think all of us are on a path or a journey in our life and this book makes you look at this path through a new lens and makes you reconsider the possibilities that may lie in front of you in the future as well. This was a great read!

Book Review & Giveaway – A Charles Dickens & Jane Austen Devotional by @thomasnelson #win #books

About the Books

A Charles Dickens Devotional features some of Dickens’ brightest gems: Great ExpectationsA Tale of Two CitiesOliver Twist, and A Christmas Carol, all of which are richly woven stories brimming with the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Add in the topical devotionalthoughts and you have an abundance of insight and guidance for faithful readers.

Short excerpts from Austen’s classics are featured in A Jane Austen Devotional:Northanger AbbeyPride & PrejudiceSense & SensibilityPersuasionMansfield Park, and Emma. Austen’s devotional also includes a daily thought and Scripture that meaningfully translates to women’s everyday lives. Time and time again, Austen shows us through her words what love truly is, a love built on action, character, and honor.

My Take on the Books

Both of these books were beautifully crafted and for those of you that use devotionals on a daily basis, you will find these books to be great additions for your regimen.  What I loved about both books were the short passages that you are able to easily follow and reflect on that are tied back to the writings of the author in question. The authors of these books did a superb job at connecting both spiritual reflection with the writings of such powerful writers. I found myself transfixed in the reading of the books and it opened my eyes and my mind to the ideas that were being presented. I highly recommend both of these books for any and all who enjoy using devotionals as they are different than others that I have used in the past, but in saying that, I also say that they are well written and that the tie to well known writers assist you in staying connected to the spiritual teachings that are also being shared!

Book Review – The Dad Connection by @scotthanley

About the Book

Portland resident Scott Hanley published his debut book about fatherhood November 21. The Dad Connection: A Bridge to your Children is available now for purchase online in both print and digital formats.

“I didn’t set out to write a book,” Scott explains. “I began talking into a tape recorder I had put in my truck as I was on my way to different construction sites in Boston. I was trying to record my experiences as a single dad with the idea that someday, many years later, my boys would get a kick out of hearing me talk.”

Those tapes became the basis upon which this book is written, as well as the insights that led to his parenting blog, thedadconnection.com.

After many rounds of editing and re-writes, The Dad Connection became a reality. Scott encourages readers to consider this book a testimony of his experiences and understanding rather than a parenting manual.

“Many of the stories reflect my actual experiences,” explains Hanley. The Dad Connection is a brief overview of his time as a dad and ultimately the basic understanding that “relationships are built, they don’t just happen.”

About the Author

Scott Hanley was born and raised in Indiana. He has managed his own successful four-star restaurant in Cincinnati, a construction company in Boston specializing in urban remodeling, and a construction business in Portland, OR specializing in ultra high-end remodeling – all while raising his two sons as a single father. He was named the Northwest Regional Contractor of the Year in 1999. His expertise and personality earned him guest appearances on the local ABC affiliate morning talk show “AM Northwest,” which eventually grew into a permanent role as one of the show’s weekly celebrities. From 2000 to 2003 he was co-host of Fox 12’s Saturday morning talk show. He currently lives with his family in Portland, OR.
My Take on the Book

Too often when you become a father you do not know what you are doing! Let’s be honest, no parent has a ready made guide to raising kids handed to them when they become parents. With that being said, you have to learn how to be a good father. Many times in my own experience, this comes with trial and error but it does take work and sometimes you will fail.

What I loved about this book was the honesty the the author shares with his readers. He takes his own experiences with his two boys and makes the experience tangible and real and allows others to learn form his successes and from his failures. The book looks at how as a father you can work on making lasting connections with your children which should be the hope of every father (In my humble opinion).

The book was an engaging, quick read and share so many insights that fathers of any child can learn from.

If you are looking to learn more about being a quality father, this is a great book to start you on your path!

Scott Hanley’s book is an insightful account of parenting and loving. Above all Scott teaches his children and us through lines of his book, to love fully and without fear. The reader is enlightened as to the importance and path for raising our children with a bond beyond words and action that lasts a lifetime, long after they leave our daily embrace.”

About the Book
Man Shoes is a must read book for men of all ages, and for the women who love them. The book chronicles the inspiring true story of one man’s journey through loss and love, told with humor and heroism. It is a stunning revelation of one man’s determination to embrace life to its fullest, Man Shoes demonstrates that new beginnings are possible at any age and at any stage of life, no matter what obstacles get in the way.

Tom Watson, Founder and President of Your Better Life, has spent his life enriching and inspiring people to touch the stars in their own careers and personal lives. By focusing on and caring for each individual in his business and personal life, Tom inspires people to reach out and help others while reaching up to achieve their own goals. His keynote speeches blend business acumen with engaging life stories and a unique sense of humour that inspire and motivate people to realize their best in their own lives.

My Take on the Book
This was a great story that was so inspirational. As a reader you are brought into the story and able to see how one man has taken the pieces of his life and made himself a better person overall. On top of this though the book make you re-examine your own life and think about how you too can go through a similar transformation.

What I loved about the book was how the author allows you to truly feel the passion and love that he had for the people that entered his life. For me, I can only hope that I can be half the man that Tom has become and show that much love too.

The book is set up to help you on your own journey giving you suggestions in each chapter which allow you to examine your own life and do what you need to be able to move yourself forward.

No matter if you are a man or a woman, this book is one that I would highly recommend!

My Take On The Book
As a part of the award winning Chicken Soup for the Soul books, this book does a great job at continuing the tradition of great motivational and inspiring stories that readers have come to expect within these books.

What I loved about this book was that it shared the stories of real people who have gone through some very tough times and their stories were very inspirational. Although many of the stores were sad and hard to imagine, they still touched your heart as you usually find in these books. The one thing that was unique in this book though were the prayers that were shared after each story. I thought this was a great addition and added much to the stories themselves.

Book Review & Giveaway – Cooper and Me

About the Book

So long, Dog Days of Summer; hello, Back To School!
Along with the excitement and anticipation of starting school for the first time (or a new grade), also comes, for many little ones, anxiety and fear. For kids (and parents!) who are experiencing these jitters, there’s an insightful new picture book, Cooper and Me, the first in a series of books that invite children to explore life with a lovable Labrador Retriever, Cooper.
Cooper and Me was illustrated by 11-year-old Alexa Peters and co-written with her mother, Monique Peters. The idea was inspired by Alexa’s own experiences on her first day of school. A talented young artist and writer, Alexa wanted to give back to others in a meaningful way through her art. Starting at a very young age, Alexa created illustrated stories about her daily experiences, and from the pages of her sketchbooks came the idea for her first book, Cooper and Me.

Through rhythmic verses, Cooper and Me tells the story of a young girl who is nervous as her first day of school approaches. She is frightened about leaving home and doesn’t want to go without her best friend, her dog Cooper. Fortunately her mother finds the perfect solution to help the little girl overcome her fears – a small replica of her beloved pet she can take to school with her. In Cooper and Me, the story of a child’s worries about starting school has evolved into a timeless tale about overcoming separation anxiety and trying new things – basic emotions all people experience throughout their lives – but this time, written by a child, for children.
The story behind Cooper and Me also offers an inspiring example of families working together to help others. In addition to helping young children gain emotional resilience and confidence through their books, Alexa and mom Monique wanted to go beyond that to help less fortunate kids. Their search for an organization to which they could donate a portion of the proceeds from the Cooper and Me book led to a charitable alliance with the Happy Hearts Fund, founded and run by Petra Nemcova, the supermodel who was directly affected by the tsunami in Thailand. Happy Hearts improves children’s lives through education and sustainable programs in areas devastated by natural disasters.

My Take on the Book

This was a fun book that any child will enjoy. The book itself was well written and I have to say that I am always impressed when I see a young adult stepping forward to share their talents and this book does a great job at sharing these talents with readers. The book shares a fun story and equally fun illustrations for the entire family!

Sometimes you just don’t know how to do something, or you want to know a bit of everything on a topic. In the past I have always been one to go to the library or the internet to look up information and many times I would find books like the For Dummies or Complete Idiot’s Guides that would provide some great places to start.

The hard part was deciding on which of these guides you should choose. I was recently given the opportunity to try out books from both series on the topic of Social Media Marketing. Below I have given you my thoughts on the books themselves.

OMG Pancakes (@jimspancakes) is an Amazing Book for any Parent to Read

About the Book

Like any other parent, Jim Belosic just wanted his daughter, Allie, to think he was cool. So he started turning the three-year-old’s breakfast into caterpillars, giraffes, Easter baskets, rainbows, and anything else he could think to make with pancake batter, food dye, and squeeze bottles.

Jim then shared his pancakes with other parents on the Internet, and became a sensation. His new book, OMG Pancakes! (Avery, on sale October 4, $20.00) shows parents how to make 75 of his cool creations. Filled with four-color photos and step-by-step instructions, Jim’s book makes it easy for parents and fun-loving foodies to realize their awesome pancake-making potential.

My Take on the Book
This was an amazing book and a great testament of a father’s love and dedication to his daughter. As you all know I am always on the lookout for great examples of fatherhood, and the author of this book is definitely in my book. The works of edible art that the author has made here is amazing and something that as I read the book just made me smile and consider in wonder about what I too could make if I put my mind to it. This book will open your mind and your heat to the idea of doing more for your own kids and making the ordinary, extraordinary!

Following Ezra – A Book for all Fathers to Read!

About the Book

Ezra Fields-Meyer was diagnosed with autism when he was three years old. He obsessively lined up plastic dinosaurs, didn’t like to play with other children, and avoided eye-contact whenever possible. When he was diagnosed, his doctors were not confident Ezra would ever learn to read. Today he is 15 and, in two months, he will be the published co-author of a children’s book withNew York Times bestseller Tom Lichtenheld. Ezra’s journey from diagnosis to his bar mitzvah, full of humor, challenge, love and understanding was documented by his father, Tom Fields-Meyer in this book.

1 in 110 U.S. children are diagnosed with some form of autism. It is a common diagnosis and there are many books about parenting an autistic child, but Ezra is an incredibly unique boy and Tom Fields-Meyer’s story is anything but common. This book is a fascinating look at what an autistic child can do when given the chance to find their own way.  More than an opportunity to talk about autism, Tom Fields-Meyer’s book is a touching, funny, and amazing story about an inspiring young man.

My Take on the Book

This book was a great testament to fatherhood and the love and laughter that can surround this journey between father and son. The book was very well written and provides a heartfelt account of the journey that both father and son were on. along the way. While I do not know the author personally, I have to say that I was impressed by everything that the author went through to help his son become the young man he is today.

The story is motivational and inspiring and as a father myself, I can only hope that if placed in the same situation, I would do the same as the author did for his own son. Though this book I am reminded that every child needs a parent who supports them through everything and that with this support they will be able to fly to areas unimaginable.

You will find yourself both laughing and getting a bit choked up at times in this book, but overall you will leave the book satisfied and happy to have been introduced to a great father and son duo!

Book Review – Please Read (If at all possible) The Girl Scout Project

Please Read (If at all possible) Book Review, Dad of DivasAbout the Book
Female adolescence through the eyes of teenage girls for a teenage-girl audience. This empowering volume introduces the reader to an insider’s view of teenage girlhood. Through their participation in The Girl Project-created in 2007 by Kate Engelbrecht to explore the personal realities of modern female adolescence-teenage girls contributed intimate, heartwarming, diarylike text entries and photographs that capture their personal and private moments. To date, over 5,000 girls between the ages of 13 and 18 have sent in photographs, along with anonymously completed questionnaires that communicate their view of themselves and the world around them. This collection of images and text details the private and personal lives of adolescents, which together reveal an amazing narrative communicated as only teenage girls know and understand. The girls touch upon universal issues, such as their struggles with self-confidence and body image, relationships with peers and family, and their dissatisfaction with how they are presented by the media and in popular culture.

Teen readers will be rewarded with a wonderful set of sincere, deep messages and the reassurance that they are not alone.

My Take on the Book
Kate Engelbrecht holds a BA in sociology. She began the Kate Engelbrecht Photography in New York City. Her project in 2007 was to  reach out to girls across the country. She sent 5000 cameras and questionnaires to girls between the ages of 13-18. The girls responded with film and entries which she shares in this book.

From the photos and the entries , Kate as able to show the struggles with self confidence and body image, the girls’ relationships with peers and family, and their dissatisfaction with how they are represented in the media.

This is a photographic , as well as a journal book. It will be a challenge to relate to you the content as it encompasses so many facets and emotions, however I will attempt to do that now.

The journals portray young women who were concerned about their body image, about being loved for who they are, and being able to express themselves in the world for who they want to be and not who society wants them to be. It was interesting to read the  girls descriptions of themselves: they can say they are strong, sarcastic, and funny , but then they can show themselves as quiet, compassionate,  and shy. Often the brave in outward appearances are really frightened on the inside.

The photos showed young women from all areas of the country, religious backgrounds, and cultures. Sad ,happy, fashion conscious , silly, scared, and those who showed the lack of confidence in ever being enough in the eyes of the world.  So many sad entries of young women who felt they could never be beautiful enough or do enough for the people around them so they would love them as they are .So many of the young girls concerned with their weight, looks,  clothes,  rather than the beauty that they are and in who they are already.

This book should be shared with parents, counselors, religious leaders, scout leaders, medical professionals, anyone who can be connected with young women. We need to help them see and feel how special they are , just as they are. We need to help them celebrate their uniqueness, talents and the contributions they are making to their world. Our society needs to stop the negative comments and expectations we put on young women today. Once we do this we will be able to raise and praise mentally,  emotionally,  and physically healthy young women. We need to cherish them.

How do we do this? It begins today with the conversations you have with a young woman in your life. You can be the catalyst for the change . You never know where you influence will begin and end.
